Speakathon is the popular annual Speech contest of Dhahran High School. It
started in 2005 and this year, DHS conducted the 14 th Speakathon. The
objectives of the contest are:
a. To provide an opportunity for DHS speakers to improve their speaking
abilities and to recognize the best as encouragement to all, and
b. to provide the audience with an opportunity to learn, by observing the more
proficient speakers, who have gained from their efforts and speech training.
Students start preparations for the contest as early as December, where they
audition for speaking slots and for leadership roles for assignments for a final
contest in February/ March. Ten finalists are picked, trained for 2-3 weeks for
drafting, editing, revising their speeches before they finally try them on stage.
Time management plays a significant role in speech preparation/presentations.
Final presentations are judged by toastmasters from outside of school, to ensure
fairness in the contest. Criteria of contest is drawn from Toastmasters
International, the international organization for speech training. Contestants are
judged for speech development, effectiveness, speech value, voice, manner,
appropriateness and correctness of language and physical appearance. Prizes are
awarded for the first, second, third place, an honorable mention, and the most
